2nd Taiwan-Japan DAS Workshop

The second Taiwan-Japan DAS Workshop was held on June 19 and 20, 2025, in Sakurajima, Japan.

The second Japan-Taiwan DAS Workshop was held on June 19 and 20, 2025, in Sakurajima, Japan. This workshop brought together researchers from Japan and Taiwan to advance studies on earthquakes and volcanoes using a cutting-edge observational method called Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). The first workshop took place in August last year when a group of Japanese researchers visited Taiwan. For this second workshop, participants gathered in Sakurajima for research presentations and a field tour based at Research Center for Volcano Hazards Mitigation, Kyoto University.

From Japan, researchers from Tohoku University, Kyoto University, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), and our center participated. From Taiwan, attendees included researchers and students from Academia Sinica, the Taiwan Volcano Observatory, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Central University, and National Taiwan University.

DAS is an innovative technique that uses fiber-optic cables to observe seismic waves at an extremely high spatial resolution. In recent years, it has gained significant attention in the geoscience community, enabling new insights into the Earth that were previously inaccessible.

By bringing together researchers with diverse datasets and backgrounds, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and foster innovative collaborations.。
