Our center has temporarily installed six seismometers in Suzu City at Noto Peninsula since July 2022. We visited Noto in May 2023 and Feb 2024 for maintenance. (installation, maintenance)
This time, we removed seismometers from 2 to 4 Dec. The removal of seismometers doesn’t mean the disappearance of the seismic risks in Noto, but our seismometers already contributed a certain role in initial analyses. The practical monitoring of the seismicity in Noto is covered by permanent stations.
It took three hours by a rented car from Komatsu airport. We recognized that this difficulty in accessing the disaster site hinders reconstruction from the damage by the earthquake. One year has passed since the main shock with the magnitude of 7.6, but many places remain untouched. Although it is not as it was, the road condition improved compared to February of this year. The roads to access some seismometers installed in the mountain area was repaired, where had collapsed in February.

In addition to the earthquake, torrential rains hit this area in September. The traces of this disaster can still be seen in many places and some roads were closed where we could use in February.

There was a special session for the Noto earthquake at the SSJ meeting in October and many research results were presented. Research results have been obtained that deepen our knowledge of seismology as well as phenomena unique to the Noto Peninsula.
The store staff we stopped by in the area are cheerfully and energetically, but their homes had been damaged by the earthquake and torrential rains, and they were still struggling with.
