Precise leveling survey of Sakurajima volcano was carried out

From November 7 to 11, 2022, we carried out a leveling survey along a 23-km route in Sakurajima, Kagoshima Prefecture, in collaboration with Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, and the Japan Meteorological Agency. We measured the amount of crustal uplift caused by the expansion and contraction of the magma chamber beneath Sakurajima Volcano.
This survey is implemented as part of a comprehensive observational research project for predicting volcanic eruptions by constructing a volcanic activity transition model at Sakurajima Volcano, which is the subject of the “Seismic and Volcano Observation Research Plan 2nd to Contribute to Disaster Mitigation”, which started in 2019.
From Kyushu University, Professor Matsushima, technical staff Uchida, and 4th-year undergraduates Ms. Jyodoi and Mr. Shimeno participated.
